Anyway, I’m a tad lighter now not having it. Now in Tbilisi for a few days to get the flight to Aktau next week. I don’t fancy going through Iran or Russia, so flying from Georgia is best option to continue east. Need to sort out a bike box and some winter clothes over the coming days, as well as eat at every single Ukrainian restaurant in the city to compare their Draniki. ted my bike into a mud river thinking it was hard rock and literally sunk half a metre. Had to clean the bike in the river and now everything is getting cleaned in the Airbnb. Really couldn’t be arsed today, recovering from illness, snotty and sore throat, so a short one. Gives me the excuse anyway to use the day productivity — a total reset, cleaning EVERYTHING, regreasing, repairing, reorganising. I’ve been struggling the past few rides to get my completed activities off my Garmin and onto Connect to get them onto Strava. After a ride, sometimes it takes 5 mins, sometimes it takes 20, and any longer than that I just give up. Oddly, Garmin, a $5T and 35YO company that designs products that can literally land a plane at the touch of a button (AutoLand), or steer a superyacht via the controls of a watch (ActiveCaptain) can’t for whatever reason establish a working BLE connection between its cycle computers and a user’s iPhone. It’s fucking bullshit. Through trial and error, I found a fix — it’s weird af, but if I go to import another gpx route via the Komoot connect app on the 840, for some ridiculous reason this does allow the 840 to push the .fit file to the iPhone Connect app.

own, this for me is my favourite time to ride after a long day: The body starts to consume stored fat/energy, the temperature drops, less traffic, the traffic you do see all have their lights on, and mentally you feel like you could go forever. I felt I could do another 50km but it was getting too dark. Slow start to the morning fixing 3 punctures in the rear tyre, all due to the Park Tool GP-2 patches splitting at high pressure once in the tyre. The patches are 3 years old but I wouldn’t have thought they would deteriorate. I ended up having to go buy new tubes from a bikeshop, and glad I did because the bike just glides on tarmac with high pressure in the tyres. It’s nuts. Tonight I’m staying in a Öğretmenevi for the first time — which is kind of like a YMCA halfway house but with hundreds of locations dotted around Turkey, in every town and city. They’re aimed at giving cheap accommodation to teachers, and because I identify as a Teacher I was able to get the half price rate with brekkyb included.

Although, I normally don’t go to Starbucks it was nice to go in and be met with some feeling of familiarity and similarity of Western Europe. Also went to the Decathlon, got a cheap stand for the bike which does work pretty well, and some electrolyte tabs which I’m going to start taking instead of drinking litres of empty calories in juices. Tonight is my first night camping on the BSC, and had a dip before in the sea 🌊 before getting bitten to death by a horde of mosquitoes. Look forward to arriving in Batumi 🇬🇪 at the weekend, I did some research on things to see in Batumi — and as a city, it looks fucking mad. Like Las Vegas on steroids. 458km to go, and I’m going to have a beer to celebrate.

way… Made it to another sea, the Black Sea, and Samsun, a beach city which is very pretty and a big change to the past weeks’ desolate countryside and gas station food. Happy to be here and next to the sea, I think it makes a big difference to my overall mood 😅 Took my bike in for “repairs”, but now the gears work even less than before, so, go figure. Instant noodles and steak for breakfast, extremely cheap, and surprisingly (insanely) good. #OnePotPerfection Having seen a good chunk of Turkey now, I can now summarise the two main cycle ways: Motorway hard shoulder, i.e. the D-100, keeping well over to the right while dodging fucking brainless lunatics, having other cars/trucks/etc beep at you while passing as if to either say “get off the fucking motorway”, or to wish admiration and respect for choosing to bike across their country. Either way, it’s really fucking annoying. But the horn is the most used tool in Turkey. Even as I’m writing this, it’s all I can hear from the road outside. The horn has become an extension of every Turk’s personality. OR, you could take the backroads. I’ve generally tried to avoid these, because: A) they’re hilly as fuck, B) there’s little chance of finding shops/restaurants, C) they’re indirect, but most importantly, they’re absolutely full of wild dogs “patrolling” them. Today I encountered 15 fuckoffmassive wild dogs, probably rabies infected, and for that reason alone — you can’t really explore the “real” Turkey, by bicycle. Always great when I can put the bike in the room, this hotel room comes with a mini bar with the cheapest prices I’ve ever seen, cheaper in the fridge than in any shop, so double-win. The hotel has my virtual card on file, so triple-win.

After some heavy research, I found that all the small mosques turn on their external speakers at the same time and then call a central phone number, essentially dialling-in to the main Istanbul Mosque’s call to Prayer. There’s no hiding from the sound of the call, like literally every square meter of the valley is covered by the radius’ of several mosques and converted home speakers. So, a hard night’s sleep.

There’s rarely been a situation where a driver has given me less than 1./1.25m in passing distance, which is damn impressive. Better than France. And the consistency shows that there’s at least some general respect towards cyclists in Turkey*. *But the overtaking and cutting up is consistent with the behaviour of a first-class-retard.

Bulgaria’s obsession with extremist ramps. I could do a whole series on them. This one was *at least* 40 degrees, and I ask, who are the ramps for? I’ve actually noticed that you do not see ANY people in wheelchairs in Eastern Europe, it appears that wheelchairs and their use are actually a Western phenomenon. And even if there were wheelchair users, you absolutely could not move an inch. The curbs here are all about 4 times bigger than ones in the UK, and there’s no ramped curbs at zebra crossings. Everything is designed to be walked with steps, it’s hard enough riding onto and off curbs on a bicycle. Truly baffling. 🦽 🇧🇬 Peeled myself out of bed this morning, missing the free breakfast to get out and ride before it got too hot. This was key to my success today, after 11am it just gets way too hot and high UV, so going forward I’m going to try and maintain earlier mornings on t’bike. Though I was going to get fucked by the Schengen Rules as I *technically* apparently overstayed my Schengen allowance by 23 days. Bulgaria joined Schengen on 31st March 2024 for AIR and SEA borders but not for LAND borders. Anyone with half a brain would consider this to mean that if you enter via a land border then your time within does not contribute to the 90:180 days. But apparently it does. I wrote a whole article on this over on my site (link below) and got some info from an immigration lawyer. Anyway, I got over the border today no questions asked.

But I’m looking forward to getting a new bike in Istanbul, something more suitable for LD touring at speed, and sending a lot of weight back home. The hottest day so far (I think), 38°C in most places, rising to 43°C in the wilderness. 9L of liquids drank today, not a single piss. Go figure. 4 days spent in Plovdiv which is an AWESOME town/city. 1. I realise an hour in that although HR BPM is active, Wahoo isn’t calculating Active Calories. So then I have to do the 5 minute Repairing Ritual, because Wahoo refuses to connect via ANT+ or BLE to my HRM Pro. 2. Then after repairing, Wahoo goes and resets all the HR data fields so now everything’s out of place. 3. I put my phone on charge because it’s on low battery, some while later, Wahoo says the phone’s on 79%, get the phone out and it’s not. So it’s basically it’s just making up the data at this point 🤦‍♂️ 4. This appears to be a bug first reported over 2 years ago, still no fix for it. Shows the type of company Wahoo is. 💩… When in a Climb i.e. Climb 2 of 6, the Climb Elevation Page will automatically change to provide key Climb metrics such as Distance to Summit/Ascent to Summit/Grade/Time to Summit etc, but if you stop at the side of the road for more than 25 seconds (Wahoo auto-pauses in this time, as you would intend it to), then Wahoo will terminate the Climb Elevation Page and there’s literally no way to get it back. The packaging clearly shows charge via disposable batteries, or via USB cable charging… right? No one buying a headtorch in a retail environment has enough knowledge of the brand’s product landscape to distinguish what that picture is actually of. Albania so far (45 mins in) has been awesome, super lovely people, people on the road waving and wishing good luck, great tarmac roads, courteous and consistent wide overtakes. This echoes other stories I’ve heard from travellers. Montenegro needs to up its game. Meeting loads of bikepackers which is good, breaks up the long days of solitude. Also lots of Tortoises (I’m resisting the urge to put a worldbybike sticker on one) #scandalous Need to get my handlebars sorted out as my left hand is fucked. Might try to reverse the bars so I’m more sat up and less weight on hands. Komoot routed me to the wrong hostel, Shkoder Backpackers Hostel, instead of Shkoder Hostel which I booked. Said he would do the work for free last week, then kept his shop open till 9pm (closes at 4:30pm) so he could fix my bike after I collected the wheel from the bus station (from Zagreb) then gives me a beer 🙌🏼 I’ve now used up 88 days of my Schengen visa, fuck Brexit very much but glad I managed to get out before going over the allowance. Still no benefits of Brexit to be found. Dubrovnik: beautiful city, very expensive, at least twice the cost of Split, and 3 times the price of Zagreb going off the Mlinar Bakery Prices Benchmark (MBPB). Way too many tourists, GoT fans, and American boomers. I realised that some cheeky cunt stole my headtorch and SA knife on the Ancona ferry which is beyond frustrating. Now in Kotor, which is stunning, here for a week then onto Budva 🇲🇪, great weather, UNBELIEVABLE views of the sea and mountains. An incredible place. Getting the drone out a bit more as it’s so picturesque.

There are 10 other UI bugs which for a device that’s been out as long as it has shows to me that wahoo has no intention of fixing any of the issues. Wahoo sent me through a 5.1km one way dimly lit car tunnel which was definitely the most dangerous and horrendously scary experience of the tour so far. Cars doing 80kmh through the tunnel and me racing to each traffic light checkpoint before the cars from the opposite direction have time to meet me head-on in the tunnel. Definitely a core memory, and brutally scary. Thanks Wahoo👍🏻 At the top of the 320m trail Wahoo sent me to which turned out to fizzle into a 60° gradient footpath. This is where I stopped for a coffee break with the Moka Maker I bought which was an awesome investment 🙌🏼 In addition to everything, the Wahoo’s music features are clearly fucked. S Club’s Reach is definitely not 7h31m long. Definitely an adventure packed day but it would be nice to have a bit more certainty especially before it starts getting dark and your energy is completely depleted. If I can find an Garmin Edge 840 for a fair price then I’ll swap it out for the Wahoo.
